Suffolk Sound Your Station, Your Music, Your Voice
Hi, I’m Nicki and I’m your Advertising Support Partner, presenter and reporter here at Suffolk Sound.
Suffolk born and bred, I started my journalism career on local newspapers combined with studying at a journalism college in Sheffield.
Like Thomas Gainsborough, I was born in Sudbury and was a storyteller from a young age, making my own newspapers to dish out to family and friends.
I have enjoyed jobs in communications roles at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds and St Edmundsbury Cathedral and I have been a regular contributor on local radio stations for over 20 years, talking about everything from the perils of unwrapping cling film to the joys of Christmas Eve!
Away from “work” my interests are many and varied. I am a book worm (or Library Mouse, as they say in Romania) and my library has over 200 books ranging from Greek Mythology to contemporary Japanese fiction and just about everything in between.
I am a massive history fan, loving it all but my history niche is industrial history, my hero being the great engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and I visit Bristol several times a year where I volunteer to preserve his first wrought iron bridge (BOB – Brunel’s Other Bridge) and provide comms support for BOB’s group and the Bristol Industrial Archaeological Society.
I am an arctophile which means I collect teddy bears and have over 100 of them including Chi Chi the panda who I have had since I was a month old.
I love watching sport and am a proud Toffee, watching Everton from a distance and, closer to home, the mighty AFC Sudbury.
Living in Sudbury means I can embrace all the changing seasons by the River Stour and I love walking along the old railway track wither into town or towards Rodbridge in all weathers.
Indoors, I build miniature buildings and I have eleven 1/12th scale buildings including a church, lighthouse, beach hut and, my favourite, an American Diner dedicated to Marlon Brando, another hero of mine.
Everyone has a story, every town has a tale, and I look forward to telling them.
What’s your favourite childhood memory?
I had a wonderful childhood with two brothers and a sister. Christmas morning in our childhood home was absolutely magical. With mum, dad, two brothers and a sister, it was just perfect.
If you could see any artist in concert, living or dead, who would you choose?
It’s got to be the King, Elvis Presley. Either at the ‘68 Comeback Special or the Aloha from Hawaii concert in 1973.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
See above! I have a lot of interests. I particularly love writing and receiving good old-fashioned snail mail letters and I am happiest with my books and my teddies! Playing my part in preserving Brunel’s legacy in Bristol also makes me sparkle, so I’ve been told. I love to learn and I have study days on all sorts of subject as I continue to compile my “book of interesting stuff” for future generations! I am also compiling my childhood memoirs and having a lot of fun reminiscing with my three siblings.
Prefer starter & main course, or main course and dessert?
Tough call and very much mood dependent! I am more of a savoury lover so right now I will go for starter and main.
Should pineapple ever be used on pizza?
Pineapple should absolutely, without a doubt be on any pizza of mine! I’m not a huge pizza fan but when I do have one (Margherita) it will have pineapple on it.
